Test at walking speed
A running shoe’s reputation on a run does not establish how it will feel on a slow walk. Take ordinary steps, stop, turn around and stand for a moment. Notice whether the sole encourages an easy roll or feels as though it moves you forward sooner than you want.
A rocker is not automatically good or bad for walking. Its usefulness depends on the particular shape and your experience in it. HOKA lists some models for both everyday running and walking, illustrating that the activities can overlap without making every running shoe equally suitable.
Include the surfaces in your routine
Test the shoe on turns and inclines when possible. A pair used for errands has to manage more than a straight treadmill: pavement edges, steps and occasional uneven ground may all be part of the day. Check the outsole against those uses rather than focusing only on cushioning.
If the route includes slippery work floors, do not assume a road running outsole meets an occupational slip-resistance requirement. Use footwear appropriate to the setting. For an ordinary walk, the main question is whether the shoe feels secure on the surfaces you actually encounter.
Consider time spent standing as well
A shoe for a short fitness walk may not be the same choice as one worn through a full day of errands. Pay attention to upper pressure and how the heel feels during pauses. A very soft first impression should not obscure a shape that becomes irritating with time.
A flared heel may feel cumbersome to some walkers, particularly if it catches the ground awkwardly during their stride. Compare that sensation directly instead of assuming more sole is always more useful. Select the pair for the whole walking routine, including the slower and stationary parts.
